An outbreak advisory has been issued by the CDC for a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to pet turtles.

According to the CDC:

  • 37 cases of infection have been reported
  • Infections have been recorded in 13 states
  • The outbreak has required 16 hospitalizations

Laboratory findings link the outbreak of human Salmonella infections to contact with turtles or turtle habitats. The CDC urges households with young children do not keep turtles or other reptiles as pets.
