Cobie Smulders, the How I Met Your Mother star, discusses how she battled ovarian cancer earlier in her career.
“I found myself in the centre of such a storm in the spring of 2008, when I was 25.”
Recently, Cobie co-starred in Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, and she disclosed how it was “grossly unfair” to be faced with the possibility of not having children.
“Anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer or even known someone who has been diagnosed with cancer is aware of its total mental, physical, and emotional possession,” she wrote.
Before her scheduled surgery, she took action: “I went to a cleansing retreat in the desert where I didn’t eat for eight days and experienced hunger-driven hallucinations … I went to crystal healers. Kinesiologists. Acupuncturists. Naturopaths. Therapists. Hormone therapists. Chiropractors. Dietitians. Ayurvedic practitioners …”
Cobie was able to win her fight with ovarian cancer, and she has since been able to mother two children.
“Thankfully, gratefully, cancer did not get the best of me. The best of me now lives on in my two little women, baby girls I was lucky enough to be able to make with my own body.”
